From magma sills
to caldera collapse.

I am Pascal S. Aellig, a PhD candidate at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz. I build numerical models to study how repeated magma injections change the crust and how the roof of a magma chamber fails during a central-vent eruption.

About my work

What I work on.

My research focuses on how magma is stored in the crust and how volcanic systems evolve toward eruption. In a one-dimensional model, I compare repeated sill injections with a simpler heat-source approach. I then use the simulated thermal histories to calculate zircon ages and test when a reservoir stores magma or erupts.

In my caldera study, I follow magma withdrawal and failure of the overlying rock. The models produce either a coherent subsiding block or a roof cut by radial faults, depending on chamber geometry. I develop and use JustRelax.jl for this work and contribute to GeophysicalModelGenerator.jl and GeoParams.jl.
